Sometimes you just need to stop and smell the roses. Along the tranquil banks of Wilson Lake in North Alabama has blossomed one of the South’s finest resorts that many consider to be the perfect place to breathe in the aroma of life.
Doublehead Resort is the culmination of a life-long dream of local rancher Harvey Robbins to offer a world-class family destination on the outstanding recreational waters of Wilson Lake. Today, the $8 million complex shines as the only resort of its type on the 15,930-acre body of water.
“North Alabama is blessed with an unmatched natural beauty and the resort is designed to let our guests enjoy it,” said Mr. Robbins.
“Since we first opened the resort in 1996, we have continuously expanded our facilities and amenities to make our guests’ stay an unforgettable experience for them. Even today, we still feel honored each time a family, group or business organization stays with us and our services reflect this,” he said.
Embracing some 1,100 acres of woodland, the resort’s complex wanders along a pine and hardwood covered peninsula where the mouth of Town Creek joins Wilson Lake on the Tennessee River.
Snug among the trees are 35 split-level cottages. All are on the waterfront with their own private piers. Materials for building the cottages, including the exposed beams inside and log columns on the porch, came from a stand of cedar trees found on the resort’s site. The cedar grew in such abundance, it was also used to hand-make the comfortable beds for the cottages.
Each 1,400 square foot cottage features a large greatroom with a wood-burning fireplace, cable television and VCR, a fully equipped kitchen, dinette, washer and dryer, three bedrooms, two baths and large rocking chairs on a back porch. On the lawn are conveniently placed grills, picnic tables and swinging hammocks leading to each pier.
A friendly Country Store near the cottages offers tasty treats, a variety of household and cooking goods, unique gifts and a selection of video tapes for rent. Joining the store is a family gameroom with an air hockey table, a pair of pool tables, video games, juke box and bicycles for rent.
The cornerstone of Doublehead Resort is an impressive handcrafted lodge. Visually stunning, the 8,000 square foot facility is filled with Native American paintings, sculptures and exquisite furnishings. Along with three executive-style meeting rooms, the lodge offers a reception area, a world-class kitchen and a spacious dining hall ranged between two fireplaces. Overhead is an impressive 500-lb. steel chandelier accented with copper trim and a hugh lighted disc. Arrowheads, feathers, spears and a Native American woodpecker design are incorporated in the 6-foot metal circles hanging from the chandelier.
Surrounding the lodge is an extraordinary 5,000 square foot wooden deck that is perfect for outdoor dining or social gatherings. The deck also joins a full-service wet slip that can accommodate up to four large pleasure boats.
For larger groups, a beach-side conference center can accommodate up to 250 people.
Those visiting Doublehead Resort for the first time are often told by previous guests to “Expect the Exceptional.” This is not only because of the facilities and services at the resort, but especially for the truly unique amenities.
In 2002 Mr. Robbins donated some 1,000 acres of land for the development of a new Robert Trent Jones golf course on the south bank of Wilson Lake. The world-class facility, which is expected to open in the fall of 2003, will feature two 18-hole courses accented by 20 lakes. Doublehead Resort, only 10 minutes away and the closest lodging facility to the courses, is now offering RTJ Golf Packages.
For the outdoorsman, Doublehead specializes in professionally guided quail hunts on their own preserve. Packages are designed for everything from the skilled hunter to the beginner and include guides, trained and registered pointers, placed birds and transportation either by their unusual “Big Foot” jeep or on foot. Half-day and full-day hunts are available each Oct. 1 thru March 31.
For those wishing to sharpen shooting skills, Doublehead has tucked away a state-of-the-art sporting clay range overlooking a three acre pond. The 5-stand course includes seven fully automatic, electronically controlled traps and tower. Instruction is available.
In keeping with its western-theme, Doublehead offers public horseback rides through picturesque rolling acres. Rides are available daily, by the hour. And, even the expansive guest pool features bathhouses disquised as towering tee-pees and a hillside brook meandering down to a kiddie pool with spraying fountains.
Watercraft rentals are available and these include pontoon boats, waverunners, canoes, and paddleboats. A list of local, independent fishing guides is also available.
Other amenities include a white sand beach and a lake swimming area, a scenic 2.5 mile long gravel hiking trail, softball field, lighted tennis courts, basketball court, and two children’s playgrounds.
In addition, bonfires and hayrides are available to business, church, family reunions and social groups. Spring and fall weddings are also growing in popularity at Doublehead Resort.
When it is time to slow down from the hectic pace of today’s world and enjoy the sweet aroma of life, Doublehead Resort may have cultivated the perfect garden of roses for one to stop and smell.
Doublehead Resort is located mid-way between Nashville, Tenn., and Birmingham, Ala., just off Interstate 65. It is found on Wilson Lake about 25 miles west of Decatur, Ala., or 20 miles east of Florence, Ala.
